Prevention / Safety

Our fire prevention program continues to grow and is evolving into a program of great pride for our department. Lead by Lt. Tom Miller Sr. our program has became a very aggressive and well organized campaign to bring the message of fire safety to children of all ages.

One of our newest aids in our fire prevention program was made a reality by Lt. Tom Miller Sr. and Firefighter Joe Longo who designed and built a simulation bedroom in a portion of our training room. This room is set up like a ordinary residential bedroom with doors, windows, furniture, smoke detector and different props to simulate fire safety hazards. Kids are allowed to go through the room and pick out fire hazards that they see, such as overloaded outlets, disconnected smoke alarm, etc. Children then go outside the room and get to see exactly what happens when a room fills with smoke which is made possible by a plexi glass wall. We also want to thank local businesses, citizens and the Ferrysburg/Lake Hills PTA for donations that made this project possible. We hope to provide a video on this site in the near future so you may see this room in action.

Listed below are some of the many activities that we performed in the last year:

 • Several times a year a group of firefighters go the the local elementary school and have lunch with the students, answer their questions and talk about fire safety.

 • We also perform a full fire drill at the school every year. This gives us a great chance to show the students how we perform our job.

 • During the month of October we visit all the local schools and daycare center.

 • During Fire Prevention Week we hold our open house with equipment displays, fire truck rides and games. This a great opportunity for our residents to meet their firefighters and ask questions.

Our fire prevention program is a major part of our job and the fire statistics for our community show us that our efforts are paying big dividends for the safety of our community. We would like to thank our residents, teachers, kids, community and school leaders that give us their support so we can accomplish our goals.
